Springtime Honey-Dos

After a long winter of hunkering down inside, springtime brings warm-weather relief and a list of home maintenance projects that need to be taken care of. From spring cleaning to sprucing up your HVAC system, there’s a lot to get done. So let’s open up the windows, let in the fresh air, and get started.

Landscaping

It feels so good to be outside this time of year, which makes landscaping my favorite springtime chore. Any leaves that fell during the winter and coated the lawn need to be raked up so the oxygen can get down in the roots. Any trimming and pruning that was overlooked last season need to be done to prepare for new growth. If we’re lucky, your first mowing job is just around the corner!

Patio and Deck Maintenance

Harsh weather conditions can be tough on all your outdoor surfaces, including your patio and/or deck. Staining and resurfacing of these areas is often necessary for the spring, especially if it wasn’t seen in the fall. Reinforcing existing coatings, or adding new waterproof coatings to concrete surfaces is the best way to preserve the slab, and the work you do now will last for years. Plus, it will make your space beautiful for all those upcoming BBQs.

Roofing Issues

Another area of your home that seems to take the brunt of winter is the roof. Kick off the season by inspecting your roof for any damage that may have been done over the wintertime. Catching problems early makes for less expensive repairs and prevents any leaks from springing up and damaging the inside of your home. While you’re up there, clean the gutters out so moisture from the April showers has a free path away from your roof.

Spring Cleaning

Now that the outside of your home is in tip-top shape, you’re ready to move indoors and get some work done. There are tons of spring cleaning checklists online, and it’s a good idea to print one out and work your way through it. Some items that are sometimes forgotten include:

  • Checking smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

  • Cleaning HVAC filters and ducts

  • Pulling out appliances and cleaning underneath them

Spring cleaning not only makes your home clean and fresh, but it also reduces common hazards and helps to keep your family safe. Completing your spring maintenance list will feel good, and put you in a great position to relax a little as you enjoy the warmer months.
