Warmer Weather and Concrete Project

We’re starting to see more and more sunshine, and it’s great to see the temperatures slowly climb. Of course in Utah we still experience the random spring snow and icy cold days, but we can still look forward to the coming spring. Soon we’ll have that dry Utah heat with accompanying barbecues and outdoor activities. For many of us that means it’s time for outdoor home improvement projects as we turn our attention to our yards.

Concrete is a popular project for warmer weather. When we’re outside more we realize how nice it would be to pour a concrete pad for our barbecue, or extend our patio for a nice dining set, or create a play pad for your toys and sports equipment, or a walking path along your yard’s perimeter, or stepping stones in your garden. Concrete can transform your backyard into whatever you want: party central, a productive garden, your training zone, or your safe haven.

When it’s hot you do need to be a bit more careful with your concrete, though. If you are thinking about pouring concrete during the hot summer months in warm weather it can be a more complicated process. Concrete cures through hydration, so it creates heat. In hot weather the process is more rapid. This can cause warping, discoloration, slumping, and fragility. Don’t let that stop you! It just means you may want to bring in professional help to tackle your concrete project.

If you’re just looking to start using your existing concrete now that the weather is warming up, you may want to take a quick look at it. How is your concrete doing? Is it in good shape or bad? Often it isn’t until the first family barbecue that you realize there is significant damage to your concrete. Cracks, crumbling, sagging, or warping are all issues that should be addressed not only for the look and functionality, but also for safety. Concrete can be repaired by a professional, or possibly even replaced if the issues are too dramatic.
