What Is an Epoxy Coating?

Tired of looking at the same grey, sad floor? You probably don’t know that you can make your concrete look beautiful—you read that right. Don’t swap out your garage or patio floors, give them a new life by treating them to an epoxy coating.

Epoxy paint is an excellent choice for your concrete floors that will give them the shine that they desperately need. This type of coating uses a chemical mix of two liquid components, which are epoxy resin and hardener. When mixed together, these two components create a tough, solvent-resistant finish that can be applied to countertops, floors, and decks. Several types of epoxy are noted for their durability and are used to seal concrete floors, steel, and other industrial materials.

What Is Epoxy Paint?

Epoxy paint and epoxy floor coating are terms that are usually used interchangeably, but the epoxy coating isn’t technically a type of paint. Straight epoxy paint contains both acrylic paint and epoxy in the mix, which is often called one-part epoxy. The acrylic formula allows for customization in coloring, and this type of epoxy paint dries like regular paint. Since epoxy paint is resistant to chemical stains on floors such as gasoline or oil, it’s typically used on garage and workroom floors.

Why Are Epoxy Coatings Used?

Concrete floors benefit from epoxy coatings because this process seals porous concrete. Kits bought at your local hardware store will have you mix one-part epoxy resin with a polyamine hardener. Unlike epoxy paint, this mix will cure instead of dry. Resin gives the floor a shine, and the epoxy floor coating protects the floor from stains, scratches, and spills.
An epoxy concrete floor made from a mix seals and adds extra shine. This can be applied to basement floors to stand up to any lingering moisture in the space because epoxy paint is moisture resistant. Moreover, epoxy paint can prevent abrasions on your floors. Using epoxy paint on your kitchen’s countertops protects your countertops from spills and other stains.

Will My Epoxy Flooring Be Scratch Resistant?

The amount of epoxy used on your floors will affect how scratch-resistant your flooring will be. A thicker epoxy coating uses a mix with resin and hardener that prevents scratches when a heavy object is dropped on your surface. Epoxy paint with a lower epoxy mix may still show scratches, so it’s important to go for a heavy epoxy mix. Regardless, epoxy flooring is still the most resistant flooring out there, especially when compared to wood. Areas with high foot-traffic, such as outdoor spaces, decks, and areas with lots of moisture such as pool floors and saunas are perfect candidates for epoxy floor coatings.

Is Epoxy Flooring Cheaper Than Tile?

Depending on the size of your floors, epoxy floor coating can be a relatively cheap option that will last for years or even decades. Floor tiles can range from a few dollars to tens of dollars per tile, and they are not as durable as an epoxy coating. It’s obvious which option is superior.
