Why it is Important to Waterproof Your Concrete Outside

Water breaks down concrete causing surface damage, eroding matrix materials, and exposing base concrete. This is especially true in areas like Utah where harsh winters cause water to freeze, expand, and result in the most damage. It may take a few years to start showing, but unprotected concrete will get weaker and break down. If you want your concrete to maintain strength and a fresh appearance you need to waterproof it.

Benefits of Waterproofing Concrete
Concrete waterproofing has become essential in construction. Concrete waterproofing helps:

Strengthen the Structure of Concrete
This is exactly what concrete waterproofing is meant to solve. It limits the ways that moisture and water can leak through and weaken the structure of concrete. This is why waterproof patios and driveways are stronger and last longer.

Resist Stains and Mold
Waterproofing isn’t just about ensuring structural integrity. It helps reduce moisture build-up that can cause fungus or mold growth. It also helps prevent stains from oils and spills.

Keep Concrete Looking Good
Poorly maintained concrete will fade, crack, and wear out. It will start to show damage and weathering. Well-maintained concrete will look better.

Increase Property Value
If the time comes for you to sell your home waterproof concrete can be a major selling point. Sealed concrete makes a great first impression and will boost the value of your home.

Reduce Maintenance Costs
Concrete waterproofing is a relatively affordable home improvement project. And because there are so many benefits it basically pays for itself by preventing problems that can be expensive to repair.

Follow these Steps for Waterproofing Outdoor Concrete
As with almost all home improvement projects, you want to follow some key steps to ensure your success. Here are a few things you need to do for successful waterproofing:

  1. Wait for Favorable Weather
For the most effective application of concrete sealers, you need three days of moderate temperatures and dry weather.
  2. Prepare the Surface
Make sure your concrete is clean and dry. Sweep everything away to ensure there is no debris or dirt. Where necessary use warm water and soap to remove stains. Remove old paint or grease by blasting it with sand or dry ice. Rinse after you scrub and give concrete time to dry. Patch cracks with hydraulic expanding concrete mix and gives them time to cure before applying sealant.
  3. Apply the Sealer
Follow the manufacturer’s directions on your choice of sealer. Some you can apply with a sprayer and some you will roll on like paint. Start in one corner of the patio and work backward to the opposing corner.
  4. Allow Time to Dry
Allow the first coat to dry overnight and apply a second coat the next day once it is thoroughly dry. Allow the second coat 48 hours to dry. Then you can hose it off and give it 10 days for the sealant to fully adhere.
